It is now many years since I completed the Leeds Liverpool Canal, however I remember the pleasure of striding out along towpaths through both industrial and rural landscapes. Hence I decided to travel from Leeds to my friends in Altrincham via the various canals and navigation routes created nearly 200 years ago. The distance is around 85 miles and will be covered in 4 "walking" legs, taking in the Aire & Calder Navigation, Calder & Hebble Navigation, Rochdale Canal and part of the Bridgewater Canal.
A great resource for planning routes, not just this one but throughout the network of canals in the Pennines, is the Pennine Waterways website.
