Walk, Run & Cycle Times are OS Estimates

Set off from Sadgill on a gorgeous morning along the cart-track linking Stile End and Sadgill, a well work path way.

Just after reaching a cairn at the summit of the track, I head up the hillside to Shipman Knotts with a view of the moon lit up on a darkened sky at one point.

The summit itself is just a rocky knoll.

The walk continues along the ridge route to Kentmere Pike, although great views of the depression at Goat Scar my camera seems to have missed them!  The views from Kentmere Pike though are stunning.

Harter Fell is the next destination following a fence along the ridge with remnants of previous fences also in evidence. Views of Haweswater start to dominate, but all round are extensive vistas.

The ridge route now heads towards Branstree, via Gatescarth Pass.  Looking back though one sees Small Water nestled in the hillside whilst on the way also the “Fence Corner” famous for the Wainwright illustration of Haweswater that was used in the author’s television programmes in the 1980’s.

It had been such a fantastic day and Selside Pike was on the original planned route, however I was going to be in danger of losing the light so missed it out knowing that later I’d have to climb it as a singleton. That meant Tarn Crag was the next destination.  Wainwright calls it a dull walk, but the light today made it anything but dull.  The strange structure on the top is the core of a survey post during the construction of the Longsleddale tunnel that conveys the Haweswater Aqueduct south to Manchester.

The final hill is Grey Crag attained by again following a fence line.

From Grey Crag the path winds down via Great Howe back to Sadgill, finishing off a spectacular walk just as the sun was setting.
